D&D5E: Land of the Sleeping King

The Mysterious Barrow

In the aftermath of the titanic battle against the mastodon, TikTok interrogated the captured goblin warchief Konkar. What she lacked in subtlety she gained back in directness, with the goblin revealing the keyword for the elephantine Figurine of Wondrous Power (spotted by an eagle-eyed Braith) and guaranteed not to call for reinforcements.

The heroes climbed aboard their new mount who took them to the goblin hideout close to a barrow that Konkar had promised contained great treasures. Having discovered the hefty stone door, Aribert was sent to scout ahead and, following an unexplained roof collapse, almost succumbed to an ambush by earth elementals. Thankfully the party rallied and were able to off their muddy foes.

Goren demonstrated his masterful leadership by blindly screaming as his comrades fought off a hideous gibbering mouther and Jonty channelled his pious devotion to Sune to destroy some marauding shadows.

After seeing off some zombie hands that induced more confusion than peril, the heroes decided they needed a rest to recover from their travails.

Of Mammoths and Mermaids

Our heroes, recovering from the chaotic events of the previous night, were given a peremptory summons from Minister Whitney to Westport to attend a meeting of the Pentarchy.

In attendance were

The Pentarchs
High Steward Ranold Oakspear
Minister Whitney
Ambassador Arincella
Belana the Just
Keryth Alinor

Goran Voss
Florizel Goodbarrel

Goran was brought forward to explain some of the legendary history of Utopia, including the tragic tale of The Shrouding.

He also explained the meaning behind the now-lost statue of the Gibbering Mouther – one of three artefacts that, brought together, would become an abyssal weapon of world-shaking consequence. The references came from the Last Codex aka Codex Mellorius, written in the hand of the great archmage Gideon Mellorius himself. Oddly, a piece of paper was interpolated in the manuscript in a different hand, stating that “The journey of the Last Ones shall begin in Haven.”

Our heroes were duly equipped with whatever equipment the city could spare, including a substantial number of magic items, and dispatched to Haven to investigate. They left Westport the next day, briefly encountering a troop of yellow-skinned, hairless devotees of Yurshta the Dragon God as they left.

After 2 days the party arrived in Haven, where they met the local mayor, blacksmith and landlord of the Shivering Owlbear, Grindle the Many-Hatted. He explained that the local area had been terrorised by a marauding beast that left no tracks, to which our heroes responded with characteristic heroism.

After searching the area, the party set up camp on a local hilltop and were shocked at the sudden appearance of a massive MASTODON being ridden by GOBLINS and accompanied by fearsome WORGS. A titanic battle ensued featuring a flying, embiggened TIK-TOK, coordinated mastery from BRAITH and GOREN and a spell-slinging PEREN. Eventually the mighty beast was felled and promptly blinked out of existence, leaving behind a pile of goblin bodies and a captured goblin warleader.

All that stuff you were given by the city of Westport

Worgs 4 × 100 = 400XP
Goblins 9 × 50 = 450XP
Goblin Leader = 200XP
Mastodon = 2300 XP

Total = 3350XP/4 = 838XP each

The morning after the fight with the ape-demon, our heroes entered the shanty town to search for the parents of Arlena and Dunstan. Using Aribert’s illusory gifts as an impressive billboard, the made friendly contact with some dwarven refugees but were unable to find any Rubyaxe clanspeople of the diminutive moppets.

Tik Tok then decided to meet her destiny as a mighty orc king by finding herself a clan. After the traditional delicate negotiations she took control of a motley crew of half a dozen orcs and half-orcs.

Alas, heavy is the head that wears the crown. The subtleties of monarchic rule proved somewhat beyond Tik-Tok and her kingdom was soon riven by internal strife, resulting in a terminal outbreak of civil war. The regrettable bloodshed caused an existential crisis in Tik-Tok’s soul which she is yet to resolve.

Aribert’s return to Boyd’s Beacon was momentarily panic-stricken, as the screams of children reverberated down the corridor. But, o happy day!, the screams were those of delight as he realised that the moppets had brought along some friends and the lighthouse had become an impromptu orphanage.

A restful evening was suddenly disrupted with the eventual arrival of the goblin invasion. The party were beset by swarms of insects and bats (much appreciated by a contented troll head), and were granted the awesome sight of a flying ship.

Then came a massive wrenching ROAR, as the heroes’ Bag of Holding was ripped asunder and the Gibbering Mouther statue vomited forth a group of SHADOW DEMONS. The moppets fled the Beacon as our heroes battled the abyssal abominations.

The battle was reaching a peak when the demons suddenly fled as the lighthouse was assaulted by an even more fearsome beast – a RED DRAGON! Fearing that death was upon them, our heroes wisely retreated and witnessed the awesome sight of the legendary beast grasping the mouther statue in its claws and, shattering the crystal dome at the top of Boyd’s Beacon, fly to whence the goblin horde came. To the amazement of our heroes, this seemed to signal an end of the goblin assault.

As dawn broke, our shaken heroes were left to survey the chaos around them and ponder what consequences such calamitous events might foretell…

Boyd's Beacon

Our stranded heroes were rescued by a mysterious tidal wave that swept them into the harbour of Westport, where they were met by Dockmaster Smythe. They were take to his office for an interrogation interview with the urbane Minister Whitney and the gnome diviner Phissa. After arranging to meet again at noon the day after tomorrow, the adventurers were sent to Westport’s shanty town.

After a brief run-in with some local toughs, Goren was approached by adorable moppet Arlena the young dwarf girl’s brother had foolishly strayed into Boyd’s Beacon, a local lighthouse made redundant by the Pelagian Compact and rumoured to be haunted. The lighthouse was located on a seastack across a rickety rope bridge atop the Wall of Atrus.

During a huge thunderstorm, our heroes braved the bridge and disregarded the warnings of a ghostly voice to overcome a giant scorpion and ascend to the beacon itself. There they found Dunstan being held by a powerful demon!

So they killed it.

Subsequent exploration reveal the benevolent ghost of Boyd the lighthouse keeper, still devoted to protecting the innocent, plus some nice items he had once gathered by beachcombing.

Escape from Utopia
An interlude

Our intrepid heroes find themselves adrift on a battered goblin warboat in the company of a deceased giant mole and a variety of grubs. Above them looms the Wall of Atrus, the legendarily vertiginous red cliffs that rise to the south of Westport. The capital itself can be tantalisingly glimpsed in the distance.

The adventurers arrived here after an epic escape from the devastation of the horde’s invasion of Utopia. Along the way they have gathered a gigantic statue of a gibbering mouther, Goren has acquired a skewered troll, Peren has undergone some anatomical readjustment and TikTok has attained the rank of Admiral King.

Land of the Sleeping King ep.3
How Sune Is, Now

Following their exertions against the goblin marauders, our heroes retreated to the TEMPLE OF SUNE in UTOPIA for a deserved rest.
In his sleep, the devout Jonty was visited by the avatar of Sune who explained that the temple had been infected by evil and required reconsecration. Fortunately, his new companions had come through the home of GIDEON MELORIUS and brought with them the golden circlet required to access the inner sanctum. Jonty was the chosen of Sune and must guide the circlet carriers in their quest.
The circlet was placed onto the head of the statue in the temple, which then moved to reveal a descending staircase. Jonty, Gwynne and Tik-Tok discovered the inner sanctum, which looked like a beautiful glade dominated by a large paw-paw tree. Erotic murals adorned the walls, and elven tables and chairs were dotted around.
However, this apparent paradise concealed a peril – needle blights! These horrific ambulant plants proved a stern test, and were later followed by more battles with such monstrosities as twig blights, giant centipedes, shrieking fungus and…a “beholder”!
Their explorations also revealed numerous treasures and, strangely, numerous scrawled pieces of graffiti, including:
If I so much as see a pawpaw I shall go mad! AGAIN! Ha ha!
And you shall see the fruits of my labours!
Helloooo? Is there anybody there? No? Well I’ll just stay here then I suppose.
Pawpaw stew. Pawpaw soup. Pawpaw fricassee. Enough already!
O, Nerylana! Your beauty and wisdom is lost to me forever. There’s nothing left for me except this…existence.
Is there a cure for loneliness? Or madness?
Love! Love! Love is lost to me, forever!
Free me from this loveless nightmare!
But the greatest danger was yet to come! Re-entering the main chamber, the heroes heard a voice crying “You will remain here as I have!” at which point the paw-paw tree came to life and attacked! Despite the tree’s evident destructive power, the heroes beat it off with ease, after which a sad and insane elf rushed at them wielding a dagger and was killed with ease.
Finally, our heroes broke into the head priestess’s quarters and the temple’s treasury, finding therein copious treasures and an animated set of armour that remains there as a guard.
Gwynne and Tik-Tok seemed pleased with their new-found loot, particularly Tik-Tok’s grand new crown with which she declared herself KING TIK-TOK. Meanwhile, Jonty awaits the judgement of Sune…

Land of the Sleeping King ep.2
Paradise Lost

Our heroes Goren, Peren, Ophelia and Jonty were summarily dismissed from the underdark city amid scenes of panic and rumours of war breaking out. Briefly under threat of execution, they were instead sent away through a magic mirror and into a long-abandoned temple of SUNE. Almost immediately they were joined by the similarly impromptu arrival of Gwynne and Tik-Tok, having themselves escaped the slave mines of TITANIS, under construction fortress of MORECH THE OVERSEER.

Investigation of the temple uncovered another portal to elsewhere (currently inactive), an altar dedicated to SUNE, a study containing rotten books and a degraded portrait, and behind the waterfall at the entrance of the temple a marauding warband of GOBLINS!

The merry band were soon able to demonstrate their togetherness by battling off a group of BLACK BEARS that mysteriously appeared in among the pews, later revealed to be a test sent my the mad wood elf BLUE-EYES. The elf revealed that the adventurers found themselves in UTOPIA, the long lost city that represented the zenith of cosmopolitan elven culture.

Spurning such fripperies as planning and tactics, our brave warriors stepped out of their hidden location to challenge the goblin leader to combat. A massive melee ensued, with the party emerging victorious after killing a beating off numerous goblins and a number of vicious GIANT RATS.

Tending to their wounds, our heroes were finally able to take some rest and consider the strange and perilous situation in which they find themselves…

The Story So Far

We meet our heroes TIK-TOK (strangely, a girl) and GWYNNE (strangely, a boy) ripped from their former lives and enslaved in the dank tunnels of the TITANIS, hellish lair of MORECH THE OVERSEER. Taking full grasp of the opportunity fate has bestowed upon them, the unlikely pair escape into the wizard’s lair, only to find themselves stumbling over numerous crumbling bones, as well as very much ambulatory SKELETONS. Their explorations lead them to the throne room of MELORIUS himself, where they free a trapped fire elemental, EZAQTAR, in exchange for details of a ritual that will free them from the stony prison.
